Protests against „Akademikerball“ 2015
It is Vienna’s most infamous ball-event: The so-called „Akademikerball“ in the „Hofburg“, one of the Republic’s most official and representative historical buildings. Organized by the right-winged Freedom Party (FPÖ) and their extremist academic fraternity-unions (Burschenschaften), the ball has been criticized for officiating as a networking event for Europe’s nationalists leaders, albeit the number of attendances has significantly decreased in the last years. Experts also see some of the fraternity-unions linked to the Neo-Nazi scene. For years protest against the ball-event has grown stronger. Broad alliances of civil society organizations, autonomous antifascists and individual members of the public like artists, politicians and Holocaust-survivors take a stand against the „Akademikerball“ or even try to hinder the guests of the ball from getting to the venue.
